CHEM 151 Honors Option (read this first before starting first assignment)

Thank you for your interest in the CHEM 151 Honors Option!

An Academic Honors Option is an instructional agreement whereby a student can earn an Honors designation on his or her transcript by completing an approved enrichment assignment in a non-Honors course.  For CHEM 151, the assignment is satisfactory completion of the exercises and problems on this CHEM 151 Honors Option Website.

In order to complete CHEM 151 with Honors, you will be required to do the following:

  1. Complete all other course work assigned by the instructor in your regular CHEM 151 course and earned a minimum 3.0 grade in CHEM 151.
  2. Satisfactorily complete the exercises and problems on this CHEM 151 Honors Option Website. The questions on this site go above and  beyond the questions on the regular CHEM 151 online homework. The questions on this site include more advanced conceptual and/or mathematical skills often utilizing topics covered in different chapters or exam units.  Satisfactory completion means correctly solving 65% of the Honors questions on this website.

If you elect to complete this work and do so successfully, your achievement will be noted on your official LCC transcript. Again,  student must have earned at least a 3.0 in the regular CHEM 151 class and 65% in this Honors course to receive Honors Option credit. Please be aware that an Academic Honors Option DOES NOT earn Honors course credit. The course name will be changed to reflect successful completion. Depending on character limitations, the title might look like: General Chemistry Lecture I-Hon Opt.

If you begin the Honors option and fail to get the 65% completion on the Honors problems or decide not to complete it, you will not be penalized in any way.

If you are interested in doing an honors option in CHEM 151, you will have to be registered and logged in to this website, just as in your regular website.  Please contact your instructor with any questions.

How this website works

This website is organized very similarly to your CHEM 151 regular online homework website.  You can access all the homework problems for the semester using the menu at the top of the page or on the lower right sidebar.  There is an Honors assignment corresponding to each regular homework assignment in CHEM 151.

The Honors option questions will be graded on a 100 point scale for the semester.  For each of the five units in CHEM 151, 20 Honors points will be available.   These Honors points are only to evaluate you in the Honors Option work – they will not be added to your regular points for CHEM 151 or count toward your CHEM 151 course grade.

You will need a total of 65 points on the Honors Questions AND a grade of 3.0 or better in CHEM 151 to complete the Honors Option.

Guidelines for completing the problems:

  1. If you are asked to (or choose to) give an answer requiring scientific notation on a homework problem, enter it as follows: Enter 2.45 X 10-5 M as 2.45E-5 M
  2. All answers in the Honors Option require the correct number of significant figures.
  3. Once you start working problems, there will be a table at the top of the assignment telling you how many and what questions you have completed and your score on each.  Your completed questions will also be highlighted.  This should help you remember your place in case you wish to stop working on the homework and log back in later.
  4. You can attempt the problems as many times as you wish to get them correct!  Caution: You will be graded on your LAST attempt for each question.  Therefore, if you get a question right, then rework it and get it wrong, you will earn the  grade for the last attempt, which would be wrong.
  5. Please read this page (it is also available in the menu at the top of this page or the right sidebar) if you feel you are doing the problem correctly but are not getting the correct answer: Hints for answering problems correctly

Organization of problems in each topic

The Honors Problems are organized into the same units and topics as the regular online homework for the course. Again, these Honors Option Problems do NOT replace the regular online homework that you are doing for your instructor.

Scoring and grading explanation:

Remember –You will be graded on your LAST attempt for each question.  Therefore, if you get a question right, then rework it and get it wrong, you will earn the  grade for the last attempt, which would be wrong.

The table at the top of each assignment gives your score and the maximum available score (max score) on each question.  These scores are not pointsYour goal should be as close as you can to the max score for each question.  The points you earn for each assignment will be calculated by taking your total score for the assignment, dividing it by the total max score for the appointment, and multiplying it by the total points for the assignment.
